Neurogenic Shock Flashcards
1
Q
What is the autonomic nervous system
A
consists of
- sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight)
- parasympathetic nervous system (rest and disgest)
2
Q
What does the sympathetic nervous system do
A
- increases cardiac output
- increased BP by vasoconstriction
- bronchodilation
- dilates pupils
- decreases secretions/peristalsis
3
Q
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do
A
- decreases cardiac output
- decreases BP by vasodilation
- bronchoconstriction
- constricts pupils
- increases secretions/peristalsis
4
Q
So what does Neurogenic shock mean
A
loss of sympathetic nervous system, that then leads to a parasympathetic response
5
Q
S/S of neurogenic shock
A
- hypotension
- bradycardia
- flushed/warm skin
6
Q
What medications will be given to treat neurogenic shock
A
- IV fluids
- vasopressors (constricts blood vessels, increasing BP)
- atropine (for bradycardia)
