What are Shingles?
A
Viral infection that initially produces chicken poxs
Can be very painful

Risk factors for Shingles
A
- Stress
- Compromised immune system
- Fatigue
- Poor nutritional status

Who is more susceptible to herpes zoster?
A
Older adults, immune function may be compromised

Manifestations of shingles?
A
- Paresthesia
- Low grade fever
- Rash that is erythematous, vesicular, pustular, crusting
- Rash usually resolves in 14-21 days

Nursing care of a patient with shingles?
A
- Monitor for presence of fever/signs of infection
- Maintain strict wound care precautions

What should be used for pain prevention and control of affected area for a patient with Shingles
A
Use air mattress or bed cradle for pain prevention and control of affected areas

- infants
