Stroke Flashcards
Define a stroke
neurological deficit caused by injury of the CNS by a vascular cause
Define TIA
transient episode of neurological dysfunction, without acute infarction
What percentage of strokes are thromboembolic?
85%
Which part of the brain is responsible for micturation and continence?
Paracentral lobe
What does a stroke in the anterior cerebral artery cause?
contralateral lower limb weakness and sensory deficit. Urinary incontinence, alien hand syndrome and frontal lobe features.
What does a stroke in the proximal middle cerebral artery?
contralateral hemiparesis, sensory deficit, homonymous hemianopia. If left side = aphasia, if right side = left sided hemispatial neglect
What does occlusion of leticulostriate arteries cause?
Lacunar stroke, very specific sensory or motor loss (sometimes both)
What does a stroke in the distal middle cerebral artery cause?
Superior = motor affected, brocas area Inferior = Sensory, wernickes area, contralateral visual field defect no macular sparring
What does a stroke in the posterior cerebral artery cause?
Contralateral homonymous hemianopia with macular sparing and contralateral sensory loss
What does a cerebellar stroke cause?
Ipsilateral cerebellar signs (DANISH), ipsilateral horners syndrome and contralateral sensory signs
Where is the occlusion in locked in syndrome?
In the basilar artery
