How are headaches categorised?
Primary or secondary, non-life threatening or life-threatening
Name 3 causes of a secondary headache
haemorrhage, meningitis, space occupying lesion, acute glaucoma, acute sinusitis
What are the red flags fr a headache?
SNOOP, systemic signs, neurological signs, onset new or changed and patient over 50, onset in thunderclap presentation or Papiledema/pulsatile tinnitus
Name 3 primary headache disorders
Tension-type headache, medication over-use, cluster headache
When is a tension headache worse?
end of the day
How long do migraines last?
4-72 hrs
What is the most common drug that causes medication over-use headache?
co-codamol
What age do cluster headaches start?
30-40 years
What autonomic symptoms occur with cluster headaches?
red watery eyes, blocked runny nose and ptosis
What can be used to treat cluster hedaches?
High flow oxygen and triptans
What signs can show space-occupying lesion?
Gradual and progressive headaches, headache on waking and affected by posture
What age is most common for trigeminal neuralgia?
50-60 years old
What can trigger trigeminal neuralgia?
Light touch to the face, cold wind, combing hair
What is temporal arteritis?
Vasculitis involving small and medium sized arteries of the head
Which artery is most commonly involved in Temporal arteritis?
Superior temporal artery
