What are the core symptoms of a depressive disorder?
Low mood, lack of energy and lack of enjoyment and interest
What is a normal adjustment reaction?
Symptoms develop after an “event” similar symptoms to depression
What are the features of mania?
Elated mood, flight of ideas, pressure of speech, inflated self esteem, may have psychotic symptoms
What is the difference between bipolar 1 and 2?
Bipolar 2 there is only hypomania not complete mania
What are some physical differentials for depression?
Hormone disturbance, vitamin deficiencies, anaemia and substance misuse
What are some physical differentials for mania?
Hyperthyroidism, delirium, infection an head injury
Which brain structures are involved with mood disorders?
Limbic system, frontal lobe and basal ganglia
What is serotonin involved with ?
Sleep, impulse control, appetite and mood
Which neurotransmitters are thought to cause depression?
low serotonin and low noradrenaline
What is the biological treatment for mania ?
Antipsychotics
What is the biological treatment for bipolar depression ?
Antidepressant with mood stabiliser
