what is it
acute onset of focal neurological symptoms and signs due to disruption of blood supply
what are the two types
ischaemic or haemorrhagic (less common)
what are symptoms
face dropped on one side
weakness in one arm
speech slurred or garbled
sudden loss of vision, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, sudden and severe headache
what are causes
hypertension hyperlipidaemia smoking AF diabetes
how to diagnose it
non contrast CT demonstrates haemorrhages
MRI shows changes/asymmetry
bloods, ECG, carotid doppler and angiography are further investigations
how to treat ischaemic
thrombolysis (streptokinase)
anticoagulant (warfarin, heparin)
vasodilator
statins
how to treat haemorrhagic
haematoma evacuation
craniotomy - disc of bone removed from skull to allow access to underlying brain
complications
