What is a stroke?
Cerebrovascular accident
the rapid loss of brain function due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain
What is ischema?
blockage in blood flow (thrombosis, embolism)
What is a haemorrhage?
bleed, leakage of blood
What is a transient Ischemic attack?
a mini stroke
a sign that a part of the brain is not getting enough blood. Symptoms last less than 24 hours
What is hemiplegia?
Weakness of 1 side of the body
A right CVA leads to left hemiplegia
What are some of the motor symptoms experienced after a stroke?
alterations in tone ataxia weakness symmetry loss of normal movement patterns loss of postural adjustments compensation
What is shoulder subluxation?
partial dislocation
tends to be weakness in the muscle
What are the sensory symptoms?
sensory impairment
visual problems
What are the speech symptoms?
dysarthria
expressive dysphasia
receptive dysphasia
global aphasia
what are the cognitive symptoms?
perceptual problems
apraxia
neglect

What are the factors that can affect recovery?
extent and nature of lesion age pre morbid status integrity of collateral circulation environment medication hydration patient experience patient participation motivation and attitude of the patient capacity of nervous system to re organise
