Stretch Reflex Flashcards
Knee Jerk Number of synapses
Monosynaptic (by pass the brain for reflex)
Normal muscle stretch –>
excitation of Muscle Spindles —>
Stimulate group Ia afferents —>
Stimulation of Alpha motorneuron in the spinal cord —>
Contracation of the muscle (extrafusal fibers) —>
returning to its original length.
Group Ia - afferent motorneurons
skeletal muscles
stimulate contraction
Knee Jerk Reflex
Tap patellar tendon --> quad to stretch --> stimulates afferent fibers --> activation of alpha motor neurons --> contraction of quadricep
Extrafusal fibers
Skeletal muscles stimulated by ALPHA motorneurons
Golgi Tendon Reflex response
Is opposite or inverse of the stretch reflex
“Inhibition of prime mover”
What stimulates the golgi tendon organs
active muscle CONTRACTION
What group of interneurons?
Group Ib
Inhibitory
Ib afferent stimulates
Inhibitory interneuron in spinal cord –>
inhibit alpha - motorneurons and causes RELAXATION of the muscle that was originally contracted
Number of synapses in Golgi Tendon
Disynaptic
Number of synapses in withdrawal reflex
Polysynaptic
Flexor -Withdrawal Response
Ipsilateral FLEXION
Contralateral EXTENSION
Flexor Stimulus?
Pain
Somatosensory and pain afferrent fibers elicit withdrawal of the stimulated body part from the noxious stimulus
Afterdischarge
Prevents the muscle from relaxing for some time.
Knee Jerk stimulus?
Muscle is stretched
