What is stress?
negative feelings and a physiological state produced by perceived physiological and psychological factors acting against a person.
What is cognitive stress?
any stress which is a response of the mind
What is somatic stress?
any stress that is a response of the body
What are the cognitive stress management techniques?
Positive thinking, negative thought stopping, rational thinking, mental imagery / rehersal, mindfulness, goal setting.
What are the somatic stress management techniques?
Relaxation, progressive muscular relaxation, biofeedback, centring, breathing control.
What is positive thinking?
When the performer thinks about attaining success and focuses on winning.
What is negative thought stopping?
The process of blocking out any negative thoughts to prevent them from leading to a decrease in performance.
What is rational thinking?
Channelling any negative thoughts and looking at the logical result of the event. Such as thinking about how hard training has been to lead to the performer being prepared for this moment.
What is mental rehearsal?
The process of going over completing the skill correctly in your head.
What is mental imagery?
Imagining yourself in a clam state unrelated to the activity such as on holiday relaxing.
What is mindfulness?
paying attention to the present moment and can often link to meditation.
What is goal setting?
Setting a target to improve the performers confidence and also reduce any anxiety if the SMART principle is used.
What is relaxation?
Used before learning a new skill or taking on board new information to have a positive mindset.
What is progressive muscular relaxation?
The process of feeling tension in muscles and letting it go
What is biofeedback?
Recording data from the performer to help them identify when they are becoming stressed. E.G. measuring HR with a HR monitor.
