Optimism, Hardiness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism
What is the main aspect of hardiness and describe it
Resilience: ability to recover after stress, have positive emotions during stress, and ability to rest, relax and laugh.
Conscientiousness involves what 4 components?
Organization, self discipline, desire to achieve and purposeful action
What is Neuroticism and what what happens if you are highly neurotic?
Overall degree of emotional stability. The more neurotic you are the less likely to control impulses and more likely to engage in maladaptive behaviours
Positive Correlation btwn # stressful events and amount of distress
What are physiological effects seen by those high in Optimism?
Low cortisol, low BP and low inflammation.
How will an optimistic person handle a stressful situation
Hit it head on rather than let it linger. Short term pain for long term gain!
What are the 3 types of outlooks associated with Optimistic people?
Dispositional: global expectation that more good than bad will happen (naive)
Situational: specific situation
Realistic: Optimism within reason of the physical and social world
What are positive Illusions?
people think they are better than they really are
What is coping self-efficacy and how can it be learned?
Conviction that we can perform behaviours needed to cope, and it can be learned via Observational learning (social learning)
What are 3 coping styles?
Problem focus: Stressor comes and focus on problem will reduce effect of the stressor
Emotion Focus: deals with own emotions, clarifying understanding, work through emotion
Seeking support: talking to friends, family, play with dog
Describe the difference between personal and collective control
Personal: I can do it
Collective: WE can do it
- Personal helps more with stress and coping mechanisms, while collective helps being proactive

- Sense of humour
- seek help from others
- decisional control - ability to make choices from alternatives that are presented
- informational control - inquire about event
How can you “work with your mind” to deal with stress?
- Mindfulness meditation
- Expressive writing: diary, poetry
- self affirmation: positive personal values
- religion/spirituality: can help immune function

Men/NA: Problem focus
