What are the 5 major depressive disorders?
Major depressive disorder, dysthymia, double depression, seasonal affective disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder
What is MDD?
Major depressive disorder: what we call depression.
- Severely depressed mood &/or inability to experience pleasure for 2 weeks
- Feelings of worthlessness, lethargy, sleep, and appetite disturbance
Smoking has the same mortality rate as this mental disorder
MDD: Major depressive disorder
What the 4 types of symptoms associated with MDD:
Emotional: sad, hopelessness
Motivational: lack of interest/drive
Cognitive: can’t make decisions, poor self esteem
Somatic: weight change, insomnia, loss of appetite
If you are depressed how would you respond to the Stroop test compared to someone who is not depressed?
Depressed person would have a slower reaction time on specific questions
What is dysthymia?
Less intense version of MDD but it lasts MUCH longer (2yrs)
What is double depression
Both MDD and Dysthymia, so feeling shitty for a very long time
What is the time frame from Premenstrual dysphoric disorder?
5 days before to 1 week after menstruation
What is the difference between Behavioural Activation and behavioural inhibition?
BA: you are under active and do not get excited by normal/little things
BI: Inhibited by minor threats, you get crippled by the little things
What are 3 psychological beliefs people with depressive disorders believe?
That they are defective and flawed
That the world is defective and flawed
The future is pointless and flawed
What are the 4 components involved in anxiety?
Subjective emotional feelings, cognitive processes (worrying, lack of control), excessive physiological arousal, behaviours that reflect the anxious state
What is the difference between fear and anxiety?
Fear is a reaction to a perceived imminent threat (something is actually happening)
Anxiety is a reaction to a future threat (not currently happening)
What is the most common mental illness?
Anxiety
What is a Phobia?
A persistent, excessive irrational fear of specific objects, activities or situation
What are the 3 types of phobias?
Specific(a specific thing, ex. a dog), social anxiety(fear of social situations), agoraphobia (fear of having a panic attack)
Agoraphobia is more commonly found in which gender?
Neither its equal in both,
A person has a traumatic fall from a high place and develops a fear of heights because the high place was associated with pain of the fall. List the CR, CS, and UCS

UCS: Trauma/pain of the fall
What is GAD?
General Anxiety Disorder: Chronic and excessive worrying accompanied by 3 or more of the following:
- Restlessness, fatigue, concentration, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance.
- 6% of north americans
How is GAD treated?
with benzo
What is a panic attack? how does it differ from a phobia?
Panic: extreme hopelessness and helplessness with acute anxiety.
Phobic is caused externally by a stimuli where panic attack is caused internally from a thought.
What are some potential causes of anxiety?
Overactive ANS, decreased levels of GABA (leading to over active brain), Cognitive attention and misinterpretation of physiological signals, emotional conditioning
How is OCD defined?
recurrent and unwanted thoughts or images and compelling urges to engage in repetitive ritual like behaviour.
What are the types of OCD?
Body dysmorphic disorder: preoccupation with a defect in appearance
Hoarding
Trichotillomania: hair pulling
Excoriation disorder: skin/scab picking
