Language
Set of arbitrary but conventional symbols which are combined in a rule like way through which meaning is conveyed
Features of Language
Arbitrary, Discrete, Structures, Meaningful, Generative, Displaced, Evolves
What are the levels of Analysis for langauge
Phonemes, Morphemes, Semantics, Syntax, Discourse, Pragmatics
Sign Language is not
An elaborate form of gesturing, does not slow down a deaf child who is learning to speak, a translation of english
Sign language does
use the same areas of the brain as speakers (and visual), same acquisition stages, have babbling
Broca’s Area Damage
Non-Fluent/Expressive: Will have meaning but will have pauses/studder and no grammar
Wernicke’s Area
Fluent/Receptive: Can talk fluently but words have no meaning at all, kind of like babbling with full words
Phonemes
Smalles unit of speech sound in language that can signal different meanings
Morphemes
Smallest units of meaning in a language
Small words, prefixes, suffixes etc
