Stress - Bodily Response To Stress Flashcards
What is the fast system called?
Nervous system
What is the slow system called?
Endocrine system
What are the 2 branches of the nervous system?
Peripheral nervous system
Central nervous system
Explain the central nervous system?
It contains the brain and the spinal cord.
Explain the endocrine system?
It is the system that is made up of all the glands and muscles that control the hormones within the body
Explain the peripheral nervous system?
It goes into the autonomic nervous system which has 2 branches…
The sympathetic branch - arousal
Parasympathetic branch - calm
How does the nervous system convey its messages?
Ver quickly through electrical signals passing along neurones, relying on chemicals (neurochemicals) in the synapses between the neurones.
What does the peripheral nervous system contain?
Sensory and motor pathways
Controlling responses such as muscle movement
What is the autonomic nervous system?
It connects the various glands e.g. The adrenal medulla
This separates into 2 branches
When there is dominance in the sympathetic - bodily arousal - increase in heart rate and blood pressure
When there is a dominance in the parasympathetic branch - bodily calm
True or false? The endocrine glands secrete hormones straight into the bloodstream?
True
True of false? The nervous system influences behaviour more quickly then the endocrine system?
True
What is the fight or flight response?
Has evolved to enable us to deal with threats - triggered by events that we find physically or psychologically threatening
What are the 2 systems I need to know?
Sympathomedullary Pathway - SAM
Pituitary-adrenal System - PAS
What does SAM involve?
The autonomic nervous system
Hormones, adrenaline and nonadrenaline
What does PAS involve?
Only hormonal
How does SAM work?
A stressor acts upon the hypothalamus
Activating the sympathetic branch of the ANS
Stimulating the Adrenal Medulla
Which releases the adrenaline and non adrenaline
Increasing BP / HR and sweat gland activity
How does PAS work?
Stressor acts upon the hypothalamus
Activating the Pituitary gland
Which releases ACTH that stimulates the Adrenal Cortex
Which releases Corticosteroids e.g Cortisol
They can convert fat and protein stored in the liver into energy and over time suppress the immune system
Name the hormones that the glands produce?
Thyroid gland - thyroxin Pancreas - insulin Testes - testosterone Ovaries - estrogen and progesterone Adrenal glands - adrenaline and nonadrenaline
What are some possible explanations for the correlation between stress and illness?
Stress weakens the immune system
Stress response causes fatty acids in the blood and furring the arteries resulting in a heart attack
Illness meaning that they cannot cope with work, difficulties in relationships leading to stress
Inherited gene meaning they get both stress and illness
Illness causing stress and stress causing illness
Explain tend or befreind?
More likely to be caused by there being attachment with the thing meaning that there is no fight or flight response
