Encoding Failure
information was not correctly encoded into LTM
may be caused by lack of attention, elaborative rehearsal, or interference
Storage Decay
Memory tends to fade over time
may be caused by decay of memory trace-the physical change in the brain when memory forms
Retrieval failure
forgetting is a result of not being able to get stored memories/information out of LTM
may be caused by interference or lack of appropriate retrieval cues
Amnesia
what is it, what types, what is it caused by
severe loss of memory
1) retrograde amnesia
- forget old stuff
2) antegrade amnesia
- forget new stuff
caused by physical damage or disease
-blockage of blood flow, head injury, drugs, Alzheimers
Stress operational definiton
the process of appraising an event as challenging or threatening and responding to that appraisal
Stress is influenced by
past experiences, preparedness, expectations, and biology (nature)
components of stress
1) stressor
- challenging or threatening event
2) stress reaction
- physical or emotional response to stressor
3) stress
- psychological interpretation of stressor and organism’s response
