A

How we manage conflicts! BUT REVERSIBLE!! The client can use them in either adaptive or maladaptive way!

A

What are the behavioral techniques for Stress????

A
  1. Guided Imagery: imagining a scene/place that represents calmness or relaxation; EX: beach, park, etc..
  2. Breathing Imagery: focusing on taking a deep breathe!
  3. PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION: Start by tensing and relaxing the muscle in your toes & work your way up to the neck and head
  4. Physical exercise: Body releases Endorphins, which is a pain killer
  5. JOURNAL WRITING HELPS TOOO!!!!!

A

prioritizing differently to reduce stress!
EX: A person under stress because of feeling overworked can DELEGATE some tasks to others rather than doing them all on their own!

A

What is mindfulness??? EX?

A

Being mindful of their surroundings using all of the their senses (the relaxing warmth of the sunlight, the sound of a breeze blowing thru the tress).
EX: Instead of saying “It’s so frustrating that the elevator isn’t working!”, the client restructures the thought into, “Using the stairs is a great opportunity to burn off some calorie!”

A

Dealing with unacceptable feelings or impulses by unconsciously substituting acceptable forms of expression.
- Adaptive use: A person with anger and hostility toward their work supervisor sublimates those feelings by working out vigorously at the gym during lunch break

A

Voluntary Denying (or Putting off) unpleasant thoughts and feelings.
- Adaptive use: a student puts off thinking about a fight they had with a friend so they can focus on a test.
- Maladaptive use: a person who lost their job states they will worry about paying bills next week

What is Repression??
Adaptive and Maladaptive use???

A

Difficult memories (ideas, thoughts, and emotions) ARE pushed out of awareness (or forgotten) UNCONSCIOUSLY!
- Adaptive use: A person preparing to give a speech unconsciously forgets about when they were young and kids laughing at them while on stage
- Maladaptive use: A person who has a fear of the Dentist continually forgets to go to their dental appointments.

A

Sudden use of childlike behavior that don’t correlate with their developmental level.
- Adaptive use: a young child temporarily wets the bed when they learn their pet dies
- Maladaptive use: a person who disagrees with a co-worker begins throwing things at their office

A

Shifting feelings from an object, person, situation TO Another A LESS THREATENING thing, person, or situation.
- Adaptive use: An adolescent angrily punches a punching bag after losing a game.
- Maladaptove use: A person angry about losing their job destroys their child’s favorite toy

A

Unacceptable feelings or behaviors are controlled or kept out of awareness by overcompensating or demonstrating the opposite behavior of what is felt.
- Adaptive use: A person trying to quit smoking repeatedly talks to adolescents about dangers of nicotine
- Maladaptive use: a person who resents having to care for an aging parent becomes overprotective & restricts their freedoms

Doing something to MAKE UP for last behavior!
- Adaptive use: Adolescents complete their chores without being told after arguing with their parents
- Maladaptive use: An individual buys their significant other flowers and gifts after abusing them

A

Creating reasonable and acceptable explanations for unacceptable behavior
- Adaptive use: an adolescent says “they must already have a boyfriend,” when rejected by someone
- Maladaptive: A young adult explains they had to drive home from a party after drinking alcohol because they had to feed the dog

A disrupt in consciousness, memory, identity, or perception of the environment that results in disconnecting from reality or events
- Adaptive: A parent blocks out the distraction nose of their children to focus while driving in traffic
- Maladaptive: A person forgets who they are after a sexual abuse

Pretending the truth is not reality
- Adaptive: A person initially says, “No that cannot be true” when told they have cancer
- Maladaptive: A parent who is informed that their child was killed in combat tells everyone one month later that the child is coming home for the holidays

A

Emphasizing strengths to make up for weakness
- Adaptive: An adolescent who is physically unable to play contact sport excels in academic competition
- Maladaptive: A person who is shy learns computer skills to avoid socialization

A

Taking personality characteristics of someone else into your own.
- Adaptive: A child with chronic illness pretends to be a nurse for their dolls
- Maladaptive: A child who observes their parent be abusive toward the other parent becomes a bully at school

A

Distancing ourselves from an uncomfortable/painful emotions to cope
- Adaptive: A law enforcer officer blocks out the emotional aspect of a crime to focus on the investigation
- Maladaptive: a person who learns they have terminal illness focuses on creating a will & financial matters rather than acknowledging their grief

- Maladaptive: A person experiences Deafness after their partner says they want a divorce

A

Inability to reconcile negative and positive attributes of self or others into a cohesive image
- Maladaptive use: a client tells the nurse they are the only one who cares about them, yet the following day, the client refuses to talk to the nurse

A

Attributing (BLAMING) one”/ unwanted emotions/traits they don’t like about themselves to another who doesn’t have them
- Maladaptive: A married person who is attracted to another person accuses their partner of having an affair
