Mental illness is associated with what? Examples include having problems with what 2 things??
Mental illness are associated with distress/problems in daily functioning.
Such as having problems with:
1. Social and Family
2. Work and School
Does mental illness occur from a single cause???
NOPE!!!!
What are factors associated with increased risk for mental illness??
- Biological or genetics -> pt. who has a relative that suffered before will have a HIGHER risk of developing mental illness. THAT’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO TAKE/ASSESS THEIR HISTORY!!!!!
- Substance use –> ppl do this because this is their way to releasing their stress.
- Traumatic life experience:
A. Being abandoned as a child
B. Someone losing a parent early on
C. Somebody who has gotten raped
D. Suffered through a tornado or a hurricane.
Mental health is vital to be able to do what?
Vital to the ability to interact, think, and have fulfilling life!
What is Mental Health “Disorder”?
It is a Diagnostic term for a group of mental health illness manifestations!
What are the 5 examples of mental health disorders?
- Neurodevelopment –> when children started having defiant issues!!! That’s why it’s important to know that when a child is exposed to traumatic events since they are still growing and brain still developing, they are more susceptible in getting mental illness.
- Neurocognitive –> Pt. having Alzheimer or other form of dementia
- Schizophrenia –> paranoid, hallucination, and delusion
- Anxiety disorder
- Eating disorder
Is our mental health continuum/Dynamic and not static?? Why? Why do they say that it can be viewed like a thermometer??
YES!!! It’s Always changing because we are constantly changing and our emotions changes always. We don’t go thru life all the time with everything going our way. Some days we may feel excellent some days we feel struggling.
There’s a continuum from Well-being TO Mental Illness!!!
What are examples of positive and negative responses regarding life events?
What is well-being?
The quality of life and our ability to contribute to the world with meaning & purpose!!
Can mental health be mild and NOT interfere with daily living??
YES! ABSOLUTELY! It depends on how we handle and copes with the stress in our lives!!
What are included in the Mental Health CONTINUUM??
- Excelling:
- Feels like ur quality of life is well and have purpose in life!
- No anxiety or problems. SLEEPING AND EATING GOOD - Thriving:
- SOME STRESS, but NOT causing any daily impairment (still able to get up, go to work/class, and still RESOLVE ur conflicts) - Surviving:
- Not a state of distress but state in which problems may be in need of ACTIONS.
- Described as “feeling on the edge”
- “One more thing goes wrong, and I’m just going to go crazy” - Struggling:
- Worrying obsessively
- Feeling miserable DAILY
- Feeling worthless - Crisis:
- SEVERE clinical manifestations of mental illness
- Experiences disruption in daily living & functioning like ISOLATING!!!
What is the Diathesis - Stress Model?
Diathesis + Stress = developing mental illness or worsen in mental health disorder
What are the 5 social determinants of Mental health??
Factors include:
1. Life course –> traumatic event esp in kids may cause u to be more susceptible to mental illness
2. HOUSEHOLD –> income, living in poverty? enough food? have social support?
3. COMMUNITY –> safe neighborhood? are you living in an area where there’s high crime? are u involved in the community?
4. Local Services –> like do u have SCHOOLS AND HEALTH RELATED SERVICES
5. Community and Global factors –> do you have access to clean air and water?
