(Eustress) - positive—> increase motivation and energy —> enhanced performance
(Distress) - negative—> increase anxiety and negative thoughts—> impaired performance
What is the general adaptation syndrome
1) alarm reaction stage (sympathetic nervous system activated, increase heart rate)
2) resistance stage- if stress continues body will revert to normal levels homeostasis regained
3) exhaustion stage- adrenal cortex fails after continued stress
What is the anxiety response
Situation
Perception of threat/ competition trait anxiety
Level of a-state reaction
ways to manage cognitive anxiety
imagery/visulisation
positive self talk
goal setting
ways to manage somatic anxiety
progressive muscle relaxation (PMR)
breathing control
bio feedback

creating mental images to escape the immediate effects of stress
what is visulisation
the process of creating a mental image of what you want to happen or feel
two types of imagery
internal and external
what is goal setting
the identification of what the performer is trying to achieve at a specified time in the future
