Streptococci (Palmer) Flashcards
What are the three classifications of strep?
Alpha: partial hemolysis (green)
Beta: complete hemolysis (clear)
Gamma: no hemolysis (red)
What are group A strep?
S. pyogenes
What different types of diseases are caused by GAS?
- Pus disease: direct damage (ex. Pharyngitis, meningitis, pneumonia)
- Toxin-mediated: caused by exotoxins (ex. Scarlet fever, toxic shock)
- Non-supportive: autoimmune (ex. Acute rheumatic fever, acute post-streptococcal)
How is pharyngitis (strep throat) treated?
10 days penicillin
How are GAS skin infections treated?
Topical antibiotics
What are the 6 virulence factors of GAS?
- M protein: adherence to keratin
- HA capsule: antiphagocytic
- Hyaluronidase: spreading factor
- Strep S and O: lyse host cells
- Erythrogenic toxins: fever, rash
- Streptokinase: binds human plasminogen
What is the most common disease caused by GBS?
Neonatal sepsis and meningitis
Why are enterococci so hard to treat?
- Grow in high salt and detergents
- Inhibited, not killed, by penicillin
- Very resistant to antibiotics
What types of infections are caused by enterococci?
Opportunistic nosocomial infections - often in hospitals with compromised patients
Why is veridans strep a great risk to patients with heart disease?
Infects cells lining the heart. Especially effects those with abnormal valves
