Chlamydia (Bailey/Dickens) Flashcards
What are some characteristics of chlamydiae?
- Small
- Gram-negative
- No peptidoglycan (murien)
T/F: Chlamydia can cause blindness, STD, and walking pneumonia.
TRUE
What are the four Fs that can spread chlamyidea?
- Fingers
- Flies
- Fomites
- Fornication
T/F: C. Trrachomatis is normally asymptomatic in males.
FALSE
Asymptamatic in females!
What birth defects can be caused by c. Trachomatis?
Conjunctivitis and pneumonia
How does chlamydia get into epithelial cells and replicate?
Elementary body form of bacteria enters through endocytosis -> modify vesicle within cell to prevent lysosome fusion -> bacteria change to active form (RB) -> lyse epithelial cell
What is trachoma?
Inflammation of conjunctiva (blindness) caused by c. Trachomitis
What is chlamydophila pneumoniae?
Very prevalent pathogen that usually causes asymptomatic or acute respiratory response
In treatment of c. Pneumonia what form of the bacteria is targeted?
RB form; must penetrate the cell; can take a long time
Which are capable of independent metabolism: chlamydiea or rickettsiae?
Rickettsiae
What is the major transfer method for rickettsiae?
Dog tick
What do rickettsiae attach to in the body?
Vascular endothelial cells
Cause phospholipase
How does R. Rickettsii leave the cell?
Long projections (filopodia) from actin polymerization
What causes the hemorrhagic spots in rickettsiae infection?
Lysis of endothelial blood cells
How is ehrlichia transferred?
Lone star tick
