Strength Flashcards
What is the definition of strength?
The ability to apply force.
What is the definition for static strength?
When force is applied against a resistance without any movement occuring.
What is the definition for Dynamic strength?
Force is applied against the resistance and muscles change length eccentrically or concentrically known as power output.
Combination of speed and strength.
What is the definition for maximal strength?
The maximum force that can be exerted by a muscle in 1 contraction.
What is the definition for explosive strength?
The ability to produce a maximal amount of force in one or a series of rapid muscular contractions.
What is the definition for strength endurance?
The ability to sustain a number of muscular contractions for a period of time withstanding fatigue.
What are the two test for maximal strength?
- One rep max
- Hand grip dynamometer
What is the test for explosive strength?
Vertical jump test
What is the test for strength endurance?
UK abdominal curl test
Name 4 factors that effect strength.
- Age
2.Gender
3.Fibre type
4.Cross-sectional area
What does age do to strength?
Peak strength in females is between 16-25 and males 18-30.
Strength development peaks 2-3- and declines after with age.
How does age affect strength?
Due to a decrease in efficiency of the neuromuscular system ,elasticity and testosterone, leading to a reduction in muscle mass.
What effect does gender have on strength?
Males have higher strength than females.
How does gender affect strength?
Males have a higher muscle mass & cross-sectional area due to a higher testosterone levels.
What effect does fibre type have on strength?
The greater the % of fast glycolytic and fast oxidative glycolytic fibres the greater the strength.
