When to use street ID
- When suspects identity is not known
- When the eye-witness has seen the offender committing the crime
What must you do before the street ID is conducted
Where practicable a record must be made of any descriptions given by the eye-witness of the suspect
What must care be taken not to do
Not to direct the witness’ attention to any individual, unless, taking into account all the circumstances, this cannot be avoided
What to do if their is more than one witness
- Every effort should to keep them separate
- They should be taken to see if they can identify the person independently
What other information to get from witness
- Date time and place where witness saw them
- How identification was made
- ADVOKATE
- If the witnesses attention was drawn to the suspect what was the reason
- Anything said by the witness or suspect during the procedure
