Street Art in Glasgow Flashcards
1970s
whilst Glasgow is famous for its modern art, its tradition of street art and public murals dates back to the 1970s when whimsical socialist-influenced murals were painted at the gable ends of houses
the swimmer
The first large scale mural (The Swimmer Beneath the Kingston Bridge) was commissioned in 2008 and painted by smug (we will hear more about him soon)
2014 City Centre Mural Trail
in 2014, Glasgow City Council created the City Centre Mural Trail to highlight these murals (you can find the mural map online)
city centre mural fund
A city centre mural fund was established with the following criteria: the artists can be of any age but can’t be in education and they must choose a location that will have maximum impact. once the council have agreed to the mural, they will incur 100% of the costs and the artists will be paid for the pieces.
urban arts group
Urban art groups exist in Glasgow, most notably Art Pistol, a gallery based in the West End and was established to give emerging artists an opportunity for visibility. they work alongside street artists and are responsible for a lot of the art we will see today.
30 pieces / always changing
there are now roughly 30 pieces across the city but to be honest its changes all the time so its hard to keep track of the commissioned pieces
remember the street art in Glasgow is always changing so you might see some new editions on route and some images might have been altered
