Q

Gillborn and Youdell’s study of 2 London secondary schools

A

Teachers used stereotypical notions of ability to stream pupils and were less likely to see WC pupils as having ability

This resulted in them being put in lower streams and entered in lower tier GCSEs (widens class gap)

Q

(Gillborn and Youdell) what are A to C economies and what do they produce?

A

A system in which schools focus their effort/resources on pupils able to get five Cs and boost the school’s league table position

Creates an ‘educational triage’ where students seen as hopeless cases are ‘warehoused’ at the bottom sets, creating a self fulfilling prophecy
