Girls And Policy Flashcards
Features of the 1944 Butler Act
Tripartite System channeled the WC into secondary moderns and MC into grammar schools by using the results of 11+ exams
Aim- make the education system meritocratic
What made the 1944 Butler act unfair to girls?
They had to get higher marks than what boys had to get to pass.
It was ineffective at being meritocratic for girls because girls attainment decreased
Features of the 1988 education reform act
1988 National curriculum made boys and girls learn the same content
Learning resources depicting women in traditional roles replaced with women in professional roles
Weiner and the Education reform act
Removing stereotypical depictions of women improved their self confidence and encouraged them to pursue higher education
Mitos and Browne- education reform act
Coursework more tailored towards girls who were more tidy because of their socialisation and bedroom culture (eg keeping diaries)
Feminist critique of education reform act
The male gaze in schools means that girls are called ‘slags’ which is harmful for their motivation. This may cause girls to avoid ‘social suicide’ and focus on their looks instead of their education
What are GIST and WISE? (Conservatives-1984)
Girls in science/technology and Women in science/engineering. Both are meant to encourage female participation in traditionally male fields.
Feminist criticism of GIST and WISE?
Society is still patriarchal because men still occupy the positions of power
Expansion of grammar schools (conservatives)

- disadvantages
Aimed to improve attainment by allowing them to form trusts and pool their resources eg Girls Learning Trust includes Wallington Girls
Pupils able to go on educational trips and absence of male peer pressure encouraged girls to go into male fields eg physics, boosting economic efficiency
Most beneficiaries of marketisation are MC privileged skilled choosers
