Define marketisation
Application of market forces into education such as the promotion of competition between schools
What did it aim to do?
Promote competition between schools and choice for parents to ensure that young people have the skills needed for work
Features of marketisation under the Conservative gov
1988 Education reform Act
- national curriculum
- standardised testing e.g. GCSEs and A levels
League tables and OFSTED reports
Features of marketisation under the Labour gov
City Academies- failing schools in inner cities that recieve funding from private enterprises e.g. Harris Crystal Palace
Expansion of faith schools to accomodate multiculturalism
Tuition fees and Education maintenance allowances
Features of marketisation under the coalition gov
Pupil premium (for low income students)
Expansion of academies (any school could become one)
Increase in tuition fees

Advantages of marketisiation
Increased choice for parents (improves quality of education according to Chubb and Moe)
Improvements in GCSE and A level pass rates
Criticisms specific to the idea of promoting educational equality
Barltett- cream skimming and silt shifting
Ball- myth of parentocracy
- Gerwitz: MC parents are priviledged skilled choosers but WC parents are disconnected local choosers
What do Leech and Campos note?
MC parents are able to move to better catchment areas, increasing the likelihood of their child getting into better schools
