What is privatisation?
The transfer of industries previously run by the state into the ownership of organisations e.g. running of schools
NOTE: Marketisation causes privatisation
What are EMAs and what do they aim to do?
Education Maintenance Allowances are payments to students from low income households
They aim to keep 16+ students in education
What are free schools?
State funded schools run by parents/ private organisations
Advantages of free schools
Supposedly improve educational standards by removing power from the state
Curriculum less likely to be eurocentric because it is run by parents and faith organisations
Statistics about free schools taking in fewer WC students
% of FSM pupils in Bristol free school is 6.4 vs the city average which is 22.5%
Allen’s criticisms of free schools
Only benefit MC students
20% of swedish schools are free schools and since they were introduced, their international ranking fell
Why are EMAs counterproductive according to Benn?
The gov also introduced tuition fees which deter WC students from going to uni and reduces the usefulness and effectiveness of EMAs
