Purpose of strategic planning?
- Org is doing the right thing
- Addresses what business the organization is in
- Provides a framework for more detailed planning
Characteristics of strategic planning?
- Long term
- Includes all aspects of org
- External viewpoint
Purpose of operational planning?
- To ensure that the organization is prepared & performs the immediate tasks/objectives to meet organizational goals and strategy
- To ensure that the organization is doing things right
Chracteristics of operational?
- Short term
- Specific focus on immediate actions to be taken to move the organization forward
- Internal viewpoint
Purpose of business planning?
- To determine the feasibility of a specific business/program
- Used in decision-making about investing in and moving forward

- Short term
- Used in decision-making to start, expand, or terminate a business
Purpose of resource planning?
- To ensure the resources necessary for goals
- Can be comprehensive or focus on a specific type of resource

- Focused on resources defined in the plan

- To ensure that an organization is organized to meet future challenges
- Key elements -> reporting relationships, definition of responsibilities, definition of authorities

- To provide fallback option
- Can occur for a specific anticipated situation

- To address emergencies that may be expected in the workplace
- Implemented to describe what staff at the workplace should do in emergency situations

What is strategic planning?
Type of planning that identifies the time periods in which goals are to be achieved
What is the difference between reactive and proactive strategic planning?
Reactive strategic planning: not ideal; occurs in industries that change rapidly (i.e., healthcare)
Proactive strategic planning: enables organization to control its environment
What is the difference between vision and mission statements?
Vision: “what an organization wants to be at some future time point”
* Inspires people to think and motivate them
* Sets a clear goal
Mission: Defines the purpose of the organization
* Provides a statement of the present going ahead into the near future
What are the important elements of a mission statement?
- Target customer
- Core values
- Key products and services
- Benefits experienced by customers
- Desired public image
What is the most important activity in pre-planning?
Determining who will be involved with strategic planning
What is the pre-planning phase?
- assessment of costs and benefits
- Orient the activity to the vision of the org
- Defines aspects:
* Objectives of efforts
* Personnel involved
* Where the planning proccess with occur
* How much time will be provided
What is the planning process?
Time in which ideas are actively generated for the organization (strategizing)
What are the best practices in the planning phase?
- Start with a destination in mind
- establish the starting place on the map
- Determine the different routes or options to get from start to finish
What is a destination?
Vision of the org in the future
How do you identify “where, what, and how the organization is in the present”?
Conduct a situational analysis
Once destination (vision) and starting point (current situation) are established what do you do next?
- Idnetify organization goals (one-two)
- Plot the course from the present to the future and determine SMART objectives
- Goal is linked with specifc strategy
What are SMART goals?
Specific: States exactly what is to be achieved
Measurable: Capable of measurement; can determine if it is achieved
Aggressive/attainable: Should challenge, but should not demand the impossible
Results-oreanted: Should specify a result, not just an activity
Time-bound: Specify a time frame for meeting objectives; deadlines need to be realistic
by the objectives that are essential intermediate endpoints in route to achieving an organizational goal.

- Plans and predictions are only as good as the data and information that influenced them.
- Planning is NOT a substitute for action.
