Strand 2: Basic Spatial Analysis Function in GIS Flashcards
What is Digimap?
An EDINA service that allows users to view and print maps
What is Mastermap Download?
Allows you to find, select and download Topography and Integrated Transport Network (ITN) data
What is the Topography layer?
A large-scale topographic database that offers the most detailed mapping available from UK
What are the 9 themes of the OS Mastermap Topography layer?
- Admin Boundaries
- Buildings
- Land
- Water
- Rail
- Roads, tracks, paths
- Structures
- Heritage and Antiques
- Terrain and Height
What is the OS Map ITN and what does it include?
Definitive road network dataset includes: Mini Roundabouts, Traffic Calming, Bridge Heights, One way roads, vehicle restriction, vehicle type access and time restrictions
What is Geocoding?
- Assigning X-Y coordinates to ‘something’ such that it can be plotted on a map
- The process of adding geographic information to a file or data base so that its objects can be displayed on a map
How is Geocoding typically shown as on a map?
A point on a map
What is a real world example of geocoding
Tracking phone location
What is Reverse Geocoding?
- Process of back coding of a point location (x,y) to a readable address or place name
- Uses already known x,y to find the nearest readable address
What is a real world example of Reverse geocoding?
- Emergency services
- Business/ Social media e.g Facebook Check-in
What have Geocoding and reverse geocoding enabled?
Geofencing
What can Geofencing be used for?
- Business deals
2. Location reminders
What can GeoConvert do? (UK Data service)
Converts a post-code to an XY coordinate such that it can be plotted
What are the 4 basic spatial analysis methods using MapInfo?
- Measuring lengths, perimeters and areas
- Selection/ Querying
- Buffering
- Map Overlay
What is Map Overlay?
Counting points in one layer with respect to polygons in another layer
