STR Flashcards
What is STR?
Advanced massage technique that uses stretching
What are the two categorical effects of massage?
- Reflexive
- Mechanical
Which effect affects sensory and motor nerves locally with some CNS response?
Reflexive
Which effect makes mechanical or histological changes in myofascial structures through direct force applied superficially?
Mechanical
T/F: mechanical massage always comes with reflexive effects.
True
T/F: reflexive massage always comes with mechanical effects
False, other way around
What is the main advantage of STR over stretching?
It targets a more specific area
Should STR be done before/during/ after massage?;
Ideally after, but can be done during. Tissue should be warm
Main benefits of STR
- Releases muscle tension
- Improves flexibility and posture
- Takes pressure off associated joint structures
- Stretch tissues without needing full ROM
Two main contraindications for STR
Bruise easily, hypermobility
What are thebthree methods of STR
- Passive
- Active
- Active-assisted
Which neural phenomenon facilitates muscle relaxation in active assisted STR
Reciprocal inhibition
What are the 7 steps of performing an STR?
- Identify the muscle that needs to be stretched and the direction of the fibers
- Ensure muscle is in a neutral position
- Explain procedure to client
- While muscle is in neutral, gently lock starting proximal
- Maintain the lock and stretch the muscle
- Once the muscle has been stretched, release lock and return to neutral
- Choose another point distal to first lock and repeat until reaching tendon
