storm hazards Flashcards
what is a tropical storm?
a low pressure, spinning storm wit hhighwinds and torrential rain
conditions to form - temperature
ocean temps around 26-27oC 50 metres deep
what is the rotation to form?
around the equator - 5o either way
what areas of air pressure must it be in?
unstable air pressure
what kind of air pressure is it normally at
areas of high pressure and low pressure meets - convergence - so that warm air rises more readily and clouds can form
how is the magnitude measured?
on the saffir-simpson scale - (1-5) - based on wind speed and thus power of the storm
what is the frequency?
northern hemisphere from June-november , Southern Hemisphere from November-april
tropical storms that are more powerful and reaching land are….
thought to be increasing in frequency
tropical storms form…
away from land
tropical storms form away from land means what?
satellite tracking of cloud formations and movements can be tracked and the general route can be predicted
how high can winds be?
300km/h
flooding
coastal/river floodingg from storm stages and heavy rain
landslides
due to soil become heavy when wet with high levels of rain
storm surges
large rise in sea levels caused by low pressure and high wind pushing water towards the coast
