concept of hazard Flashcards
what is a hazard?
a potential threat to human life and property caused by an event
what are the three major types of geohraphical hazard?
geophysical, atmospheric and hydrological
what is meant by a geophysical hazard?
caused by land processes - majorly tectonics plates (volcanos)
what is meant by an atmospheric hazard?
hazards caused by atmospheric processes and the conditions creased because of these g.g weather systems
what is meant by an hydrological hazard?
hazards caused by water bodies and movements (e.g flood)§
What are the aspects of hazards?
incidence, intensity, magnitude, distrubution, level of development
Aspect of hazard: incidence
frequency of a hazard
aspect of hazard: intensity
power of a hazard i.e how strong it is
aspect of hazard: magnitude
the size of the hazard, usually this is how a hazard’s intensity is measured
aspects of hazard: distrubution
where hazards occur
aspect of hazard: level of development
economic development will affect how they respond - hazard of same magnitude may have different effect in 2 different places
