seismic hazards Flashcards
plates dont move in…
fluid motiosn
why do plates become stuck (at any boundary)?
friction between plates
when pressure builds up what eventually happens?
give way and pressure is released quickly creating jolting movement
what is the jolt responsible for?
seismic movement spreading throughout the ground
what is the focus?
the point underground where the earthquake originates from
what is the spatial distribution?
along all boundaries
what is seismicity?
to measure the strength of seismic waves
what is seismicity measured with?
the logarithmic richter scale
what does the mescali scale look at?
rate of the destruction caused
are earthquakes frequent?
yes
what is most frequent?
smaller magnitude earthquakes
do earthquakes follow any pattern?
no - they are random
can u predict earthquakes?
almost impossible - microquakes may give some indication but the magnitude cannot be predicted as how strong they are as they r random
what are some siesmic events?
shockwaves, tsunamis, liquefaction and landslides and avalanches
what are shockwaves?
energy released from the sudden jolt that vibrates through the ground
