Def
Also called Wry neck/torticollis is a muscular disorder in which the neck is twisted and the head is pulled to one side. It’s usually caused by a poor sleep posture, improper turning of the neck or exposure of neck to pathogenic wind cold
Etiology
Qi and Blood Stasis –> Improper pillow height
- -> Improper sleep posture }Chronic Strain of mm in neck - --> Muscular sprain - --> Sudden turn of head } Acute mm sprain in neck
Invasion of Wind Cold –> Exposure to wind cold during sleep
–> Living in wet place } Disturbance of local
circulation of Qi and Blood in Meridians
What does WADS stand for?
Whiplash Associated Disorder
Education
Adjust pillow height Keep warm Avoid EPF Self Massage to move Qi Warm up before exercise to avoid injury
Distending pain on one side of the neck, oblique head to the diseased side, lower jaw turning to healthy side and limited movement, pain may radiate to upper back and upper limb, may have history of injury, no obvious general symptoms
Qi and Blood Stagnation
Distending pain on one side of the neck, oblique head to the diseased side, lower jaw turning to healthy side and limited movement, pain may radiate to upper back and upper limb, chills/fever, general aching, heavy sensation of head

Differentiation
*Pain on one side* Radiating to shoulder and arm Worse/occurs at night Limited ROM Palpate for meridian involved
–> chronic can be due to degeneration of cervical spine: numbness, slow onset etc. Need an X-ray to rule this out
–> Meridian Differentiation, palpate, ROM difficulties - “Moving acup
Technique”
