sticking brakes Flashcards
may be detected by
retardation of train
smoke or odour
observation of the brake cylinder gauges
illuminated fault lights
if the brake of number 1 bogie is stuck
the BC gauge will indicate
when the brake pipe is charged the triple valve can release
the dump valve instruction the auxiliary reservoir pressure in emergency brake or auto air brake, lets the triple valve release brake once the BP is charged
the dump valve is the main component of applying brakes
if it fails it might leave pressure in the aux res and the triple valve can’t release
causes of sticking brakes
defective dump valve
defective tripple valve
broken rigging
blocked exhaust port on a brake cylinder
if sticking brakes occur when changing ends it could be a regulating valve issue
if the aux res isn’t ok the dump valve and tripple valve can’t do its job
sticking brakes in running
check pressures are ok
no air escaping from the charging valve
trip out the EP make a full service application then release
drive to signals and conditions asses if fault has cleared
rectifying sticking brakes while stationary
if it doesn’t rectify in running come to a stand and…
ensure pressures are on
fan the handle in EP release to step 7
apply minimum power and shut off
see if the train rolls freely
if not stop at a location for better fault finding
TEC CALL PA RTA FULL CAB UNATTENDED
inspect brakes and wheels, determine wether it’s a park brake or entire bogie
if it’s the bogie isolate the bogie with the IC, if it continues to vent isolate SPB and manually release all SPbs on that bogie
you may suspect it’s SPB if it’s on an odd wheel if it is a SPB manually release it
sticking brakes in the MURL
not permitted to enter
if it happens in there TC will stop all trains
try and stop before a platform and rectify
if you can’t extreme caution to the platform and call fleet
if you can’t get to a platform controlled evacuation
