ASYMPTOMATIC on majority of patients in women
And 50 percent in males
Women Cervicitis - discharge and bleeding and dysuria
Men - urethral discharge and dysurea
What are the potential complication of chlamydia ?
Epidiymitis
PID
Endometritis
Infertility
Ectopic pregnancy
Reactive arthritis
What investigations are ordered for chlamydia trachomatis ?
Women first line : vulvovaginal swab
Men first line : urine test first line
Tested using NAAT technique
Testing carried out two weeks after possible exposure
What is the management of chlamydia ?
First line - doxycycline
It used to be azithromycin however there is rising level of resistance using this due to chlamydia being coexistent and with mycoplasma genitalium

Of doxy contraindicated
Then azithromycin 1g OD for one day then 500mg OD for two days

Pregnancy - azithro/ erythromycin
Or amoxicillin
Should treatment for chlamydia be given to those that had sexual contact with someone with a positive test ?
Yes -contacts of confirmed Chlamydia cases should be offered treatment prior to the results of their investigations being known (treat then test)
Chlamydia trachomatis also causes infection that takes part in three stages ?
Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)
What are the three stages for chlamydia trachomatis ?
stage 1: small PAINLESS pustule which later forms an ulcer
stage 2: painful inguinal lymphadenopathy
stage 3: proctocolitis - tender inguinal lymphadenopathy and proctoscopy

vaginal discharge: offensive, yellow/green, frothy

pH > 4.5
in men is usually asymptomatic but may cause urethritis
