What is Lemierre’s syndrome
A
infectious thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein

Etiology of Lemierre’s syndrome
A
Thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein caused by usually a peritonsilar abcess (by Fusobacterium necrophorum )

How does peritonsilar abcess lead to lemierre’s disease
A
spread of the infection laterally from the abscess and compression lead to thrombosis of the IJV.

Presentation of liemers disease ?
A
sore throat
followed by neck pain, stiffness and tenderness (may be mistaken for meningitis)
and systemic involvement (fevers, rigors, etc)

Major complication of Lemierre’s disease
A
Septic pulmonary emboli
