What is SJS.
A severe form of erythema multiforme and a variant of toxic epidermal necrolysis.
What is SJS caused by.
It is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction.
What are the usual causes of the hypersensitivity reaction in SJS. (3)
Drugs.
Infections.
Cancer.
What drugs can induce SJS. (6)
Salicylates. Sulfonamides. Penicillin. Barbiturates. Carbamazepine. Phenytoin.
What are the features of SJS. (2)
Ulceration of the skin and mucosal surfaces.
Typical target lesions develop (often on the palms or soles with blistering in the centre).
What are some systemic symptoms of SJS. (6)
Fever. Malaise. Arthralgia. Myalgia. Vomiting. Diarrhoea.
What is the prognosis for patients with SJS. (3)
Mortality is 5%.
May be severe for the first 10days before resolving over 30days.
Damage to the eyes may persist and blindness can result.
What mucosal surfaces are often involved in SJS. (3)
Mouth.
Genital.
Eye.
What drugs may cause SJS. (4)
NSAIDs.
Sulfonamides.
Anti-convulsants.
Allopurinol.
What infections may cause SJS. (2)
Herpes.
Mycoplasma.
