What is it? Stereotyping
It is a fixed,over generated belief about a particular group or class of people - Cardwell
Advantages
It enables us to respond rapidly to situations due to experience
Disadvantages
We ignore differences with individuals we beliefs think things that may not be true
We use it to simplify our social world; reduces our level of thinking when we met new people.
Most stereotyping leads to conveying a negitive impression.

To investigate stereotypes of Americans towards different races
Method stereotyping 1
Questionnaire-
To investigate stereotypes.
Given a list of nationalities & 84 personality traits.
Told to pick 5-6 typical to each group
Results-1
Americans listed themselves as industrious, progressive, & ambitious.
African Americans as - lazy, ignorant and Musial.
All participAnts were very willing to participate. None refused.
Conclusion-1
Ethical stereotypes are widespread & passed from members of particular social groups.
Experiment 2-
Darley & gross (1983)
Schemes processed in social world
(2) method-
2 videos of a little girl were shown.
Video 1 she was playing in a poor environment.
Video 2 she was playing in a rich environment.
They were then shown a video of a girl in a intellectual test
Results (2)
When asked to judge the little girls future they said the little girl in the richer environment would do much better than poor girl.
Conclusion (2)
That participAnts use pre-stored schemes of what it means to be poor and rich therefore interpreted the ambiguous information accordingly.
