Stem Cells And Meristems 2.2 Flashcards
What 2 things are stem cells able to do?
They can become specislisd, so the can turn into any type of specialised cell
They can undergo repeated divisions, and staying unspecialised
What is a stem cell?
An unspecialised animal cell involved in growth and repair
What are the two types of stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells
Adult stem cells
What can an embryonic stem cell do?
These are capable of developing into all cell types found in the human body. They can also regenerate an entire organ from a few cells
What an adult stem cells do?
These can only specialise into more limited selection of stem cells
What contains the most stem cells?
Bone marrow
What happens if the tissue is healthy, what does the stem cells do?
Stem cells will remain inactive and do not divide.
What happens if the tissue is damaged what does the stem cell do?
Self renewal of the stem cells is triggered together with production of enough new cells to repair the damaged tissue
What are the cons of embryonic cells
Requires the destruction of an embryo
Patients require drugs so that they don’t reject the cells
What are the cons of adult stem cells
Limited number of cell types can be generated
What is meristems?
Production of new cells
Where do u find the production of new cells?
Meristems?
Are meristems specialised or unspecialised?
Unspecialised
Where is meristems?
Tips of roots and tips of shoots
Name some meristems
Shoot Apex meristem
Root apex meristem
Cambium meristem
