Stem Cells! Flashcards
Hayflick Limit
40-50 cell divisions is a mx. before cells stop growing and instead start aging
Stem cell don’t follow ___?
Hayflick Limit (Have the ability to renew themselves for long periods of time)
Stem Cells
2
- Unspecialized, undifferentiated cells
2. Can be induced to differentiate into cells with a specialized function
Types of stem cells?
- Embryonic
- Adult (somatic)
- Incuded pluripotent
Hierarchy (3)
- Totipotent
- Pluripotent
- Multipotent
Totipotent
Can give rise to embryo/placenta cells PLUS any cell in the body
Pluripotent
Can rise rise to any cell in the body
Multipotent ex:
Blood cells, muscle, nerve, bone, other tissues
Embryonic Stem Cells
What?
From Where?
Cells from a 5 day pre-implantation stage embryo
Pluripotent - develop into any cell in the body
Come from inner cells of the blastocyst
Inner cells of the blastocyst…
Form all the cells in the body!
4 types of embyronic stem cells
- Ectoderm
- Mesoderm
- Endoderm
- Germline
Adult Stem Cells
RARE cells located in different tissues that have constant turnover
MULTIpotent - can develop into several cells - not all.
Important for regenerative + repair functions
