stem cells Flashcards
male chromosomes
female chromosomes

mitosis
the division of a cell takes place in all cells
produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells
full set of chromosomes (like the mother which is a diploid)
which allows the cell allows the organism to grow, replace old cells and repair damaged tissues.
meosis
a type of cell division produces 4 genetically different daughter cells which are known as gametes and are different to the mother cell
Meiosis involves two divisions
produces cells with half the number of chromosomes (23 chromosomes so they are haploid).
It is important in creating genetic variation and ensuring that the resultant zygote has a full set of chromosomes.
only occurs in reproductive cells formation of sex cells(gametes) like eggs and sperm for sexual reproduction.
stem cells
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can differentiate into any other type of cell.
source of stem cell
embryonic tissue
adult stem cells that occur in some tissue.
why are stem cells used
stem cells can be used to treat many diseases the have many uses in the medical field the can treat cancer diabetes
is it better to use your own stem cells ? why ?
- no rejection
- no need to find a donor
- no need for tissue typing
- avoids the use of embryonic stem cells which raises particular ethical issues.
what is cancer the result of
uncontrolled mitosis
state the process of mitosis
mother cell has 4 chromosomes
DNA of mother cell replicates
cell divides
one copy of each chromosome goes in to each cell
where are chromosomes found
it he nucleus but they are only visible when the cell is about to divide
the chromosome is made up of dna (chemical)
