Statistical Technique Pros Flashcards
Chi-squared test
Allows us to see and make comparisons between two variables to see if they are related.
Useful in measuring differences between what is observed and expected.
Gives a value which can be compared to statistical tables to access significance.
Useful when the data is grouped together into classes.
Can be used with distributions of data.
Nearest Neighbour
Allows you to compare distribution of either 2 similar or 2 different areas which you can explain.
Better than visual observation which can be subjective and people can differ in their interpretation.
Can allow you yo make sense of something which could be difficult to describe.
Spearmans rank
Fairly quick and easy to calculate if data is not too large.
Correlation allows you to identify significance of relationships between 2 variables more accurately than a line of best fit on a scattergraph.
Good when you are unsure if the data is normally distributed and if data is on an ordinal scale.
As data is ranked extreme values wont effect results.
Linear regression
Better than using your own judgement.
Implements a statistical model that, when relationships between the independent variable and the dependent variable are almost linear, shows optimal results,
Pearsons product
Uses actual values rather than ranks so more accurate, robust and reliable then spearmans when drawing conclusions.
Differences between values within the data set are taken into account so more accurate than ranking.
