physical gathering pros Flashcards
Vegetation Analysis
Allows us to analyse the impact that micro climate, altitude, aspect, soil type and human/animal activity has on vegetation.
Transects can be used for a large scale or a quadrat can be used for small scale
Slope analysis
Allows you to see changes in slope which can then be linked to things like soil or vegetation
Can be used for minor changes in the land rather than a whole transect, eg on a drumlin.
Stream analysis
Lots of aspects of a river can be analysed with stream analysis and use of maps.
A lot of river data is straightforward to collect and provide rich quantities of data for analysis.
Even if you can’t access a river lots of information can be taken from maps or bridges
Soil analysis
Allows a very in depth analysis and allows the demonstration of skill and commitment as digging soil pits can be complex
Can be used to compare the impact of soil in crops vegetation etc, as well as physical impacts such as wind or rain.
Quantitative data can be gathered which can then be taken for statistical analysis
Beach profiles
lots of different measurements can be carried out whihc gives rich quantative data to be analysed.
old maps can be useful in looking at changes along the coast Eg splits, salt flats
Pebble analysis
Pebblometer are quick to use so you can process lots of pebbles quickly.
large samples can be measured on site so not requiring carriage back .
grouping pebbles into classes can save time during analysis later.
using powers scale of roundness is quick and minor irregularities can be ignored and instead lookng at general shape of a stone.
Microclimate
Allows a selection of quantitative date to be gathered for analysis and application in statistics.
A N-S transect is best for comparison.
