Map Technique pros Flashcards
Dot maps
Allows easy comparisons
lots of different things can be shown, Eg crops, population, minerals
can give good picture of densities and distribution at a glance,Ie visual.
Use of a dot allows for a value to be put on a precise location.
easy to construct and interpret data.
Isoline maps
Allows you to join together areas with the same values, establishing links between them.
Allows you to see a gradual pattern more clearly across a large area.
Changes can be easily identified.
Cloropleth maps
allows for easy visual comparison between areas.
shows averages for each area making it easy to compare.
easy to draw and shade in differences.
grouping data makes it straight forward to work with a range of values.
Proportional symbols
Allows us to see differences between many places at a glance.
Large amount of data can be summarized in a visual way.
trends and patterns are easy to identify.
can be used for a precise geographical location.
can use a key to make map less crowded.
Flow Maps
allows to see links between places clearly.
can clearly see volume and direction of movement, ie visual.
Thickness of lines allows you to compare places to each other.
can show a variety of different movements, Eg people, goods
Cross section
Lets you focus on a specific part of an area rather than a full area.
allows shape to be examined more clearly.
good visual overview of the study area.
Sphere of influence
Allows you to show visually where people come from to access a shop/service.
Can work out area distance allowing you to make comparisons with other places.
lets you compare differences Eg SOI of an edge of city VS CBD shopping center
Transect
Lets you focus on specific parts of an urban area.
can compare land use across a transect or different transect areas
can allow a good overview for comparison.
Annotated overlay
Allows you to pick out key information about a specific part of a map, diagram, photo, sketch.
you can annotate information exactly where it needs to be.
Detail of base does not become obscured or cluttered.
Detail of base is kept so no information is lost
