'Statistical infrequency' Defintion Flashcards
What are the 4 definitions of defining abnormalities?
1) Statistical infrequency
2) Deviation from social norms
3) Failure to function adequately
4) Deviation from ideal mental health
Definition of statistical infrequency.
Deviating from the statistical norm of average.
Individual human characteristics can be measured and plotted on a normal distribution.
Those behaviours at either end o the distribution can be considered abnormal.
What percentage of people fall into the mean (standard deviation)?
68%
What percentage of people fall into 2 standard deviations?
95%
What percentage of people fall into 3 standard deviations?
99.6%
What is the first limitation of the ‘statistical infrequency’ definition?
Some abnormal behaviour is desirable.
Example: High IQ
This leaves us unable to identify behaviours that require psychological treatment to help people cope with everyday life.
What is the second limitation of the ‘statistical infrequency’ definition?
The ‘cut-off’ point is often subjective.
Sometimes symptoms of disorders
Example: Depression
are difficult to measure and assign a ‘statistical’ cut-off point to show were help is needed.
Example: sleeplessness or low mood.
What is the tail for the limitations of the ‘statistical infrequency’ definition?
Therefore the definition is ineffective at defying all abnormalities.
