What is the first limitation of ‘deviation from ideal mental health’?

A

Overdemanding (unrealistic) criteria.

Most people cannot meet the demand of Jahoda’s checklist (therefore if you can you are abnormal?)

Q

What is the third limitation of ‘deviation from mental health’?

A

Cultural relativism.

Independence is seem as abnormal within collectivist societies (so this definition cannot be generalised to these cultures).

Also mental health criteria varies across cultures.

Example: certain phobias are recognised in certain cultures only. E.G. arachnophobia UK vs AU. Koro in S.E Asia.
