1) Personal distress.
2) Maladaptive. (stops you achieving goals)
3) Unpredictable. (doesn’t suit circumstances)
4) Irrational behaviour. (unexplainable)
5) Cause observant discomfort.
6) Deviation from social norms and values.
What is the fist limitation of ‘Failure to function adequately’ definition?
Abnormality isn’t always accompanied by dysfunction.
Psychopaths can lead seemingly ‘functional’ lives e.g. family,
Examples: Harold Shipman, Fred and Rose West.
What is the second limitation of ‘Failure to function adequately’ definition?
Subjective (who judges).
Rosehan and Seligman’s checklist is THEIR opinion of dysfunction (not everyone’s).
Also distress thresholds differ between inderviduals.
What is the third limitation of ‘failure to function adequately’ definition?
Functional dysfunction.
Attention seeking behaviours that gain (wanted) attention.
