Statistical Evaluation of Data Flashcards
Bar graph
uses a separate and distinct bar for each piece of information
Central tendency
A statistical measure that identifies a single score that defines the center of a distribution
Descriptive statistics
Statistical methods used to organize, summarize, and simplify the results obtained from research studies
Frequency distribution
visual displays that organise and present frequency counts so that the information can be interpreted more easily
Frequency polygons
a line graph of class frequency plotted against class midpoint
Histogram
a graph that shows the frequency of numerical data using rectangles
Inferential Statistics
Statistical methods used to determine when it is appropriate to generalize the results from a sample to an entire population
Mean
A measure of central tendency obtained by adding the individual scores and dividing the sum by the number of scores
Median
A measure of central tendency that identifies the score that divides the distribution in half so that 50% of the individuals have scores at or below the median
Mode
A measure of central tendency that identifies the most frequently occurring score in the distribution
Null hypothesis
no relationship exists between two sets of data or variables being analyzed.
Pie chart
divides into different sectors
Significance test
the difference between the sample mean and the population mean is statistically significant
Standard deviation
A measure of variability that describes the average distance from the mean; obtained by taking the square root of the variance
Variability
a quantitiative measure of the degree to which scores in a distribution are spread out or clustered together
