Static Electricity Flashcards
What is build up of static caused by?
Friction
What happens when certain insulating materials are rubbed together?
Negatively charged electrons will be scrapped off one and left on the other one
Leaving a positive static charge on one and a negative static charge on the other
What does the way the electrons are transferred depend on?
The two materials involved
What happens when a polythene rod is rubbed with a cloth duster?
The electrons move from the duster to the rod
What happens when the acetate rod is rubbed with a cloth duster?
The electrons move from the rod to the duster
What are both positive and negative electrostatic charges caused by?
Th movement of electrons
Positive protons never move
What happens when two things with opposite electric charges are brought together?
Attracted to each other
What happens when two things with the same same electric charge are brought together?
They repel
What happens as the objects get further apart?
The forces get weaker
What is a name for a material that electrical charges can be easily move through?
Conductors
E.g metals are good conductor
