States of matter Megan mayer Flashcards
What is a liquid?
They can change shape not volume. They have a definite volume but change shape depending on the object they are in
What is a soild?
They have a definite shape and volume.
What is a gas?
There molecules are free to spread in all directions.
What is a plasma?
It’s a state of matter that does not have a define shape and the particles are broken apart. It starts out as a gas and then becomes ionized.
What is energy?
The ability to change or move matter and to do work.
What is thermal energy?
The total kinetic energy that make up an object. The molecules move faster when heated up.
What is evaporation?
The change from a liquid to a gas.
What is sublimation?
When a soild changes directly into a gas.
What is condensation?
A change from gas to liquid.
What is crystalline solid?
They are an arrangement of atoms or molecules in a order.
What is a amorphous soild?
Atoms or molecules that are composed in no particular order.
What is surface tension?
A force acting on particles that make the liquid to turn into spherical drops.
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of motion.
What is heat?
It causes the temperature of a substance change. Which can change the state of matter too.
What is a endothermic change?
When a substance changes requiring melting and energy.
What is a exoteric change?
When a substance is freezing and realizing energy while changes states of matter.
What is a fluid?
A state of matter where the molecules are free to move past each other as Ina gas or a liquid.
What is a buoyant force?
The upward force exerted on an object
What is pressure?
The amount of force exerted per unit area of a surface
What is the Archimedes’ principle?
The principle that states that the buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force.
What is pascal?
The SI unit for pressure. (Pa)
What is pascal’s principle?
States that a fluid in equilibrium contained in a vessel exerts a pressure of equal intensity in all directions.
What is viscosity?
The resistance of a gas or liquid to flow
What is Bernoulli’s principle?
States that as speed of a moving fluid increases, the pressure of the moving fluid decreases.
What is Boyle’s Law?
States that for a fixed amount of gas at a constant temperature, the volume of the gas increases as the pressure decreases. The volume decreases and the pressure increases.
What is Charles’s Law?
States that the fixed amount of gas at a constant pressure, the volume of the gas increases as the temperature increases. The volume decreases as the temperature decreases
What is Gay-Lusaac’s Law?
The law states that the pressure of a gas at a constant volume is directly proportional to the absolute temperature
